ProWritingAid alternatives: editing tools grouped by the job
ProWritingAid mixes line editing (grammar, style, repetition) with story-level critiques. Most alternatives do one of those jobs, not both, so the right choice depends on which job you need. Below are five alternatives in our directory, grouped that way.
For reference: ProWritingAid (as of Oct 2026, USD)
ProWritingAid has a free plan that checks 500 words at a time. Premium is $30/month billed monthly, $120 a year, or $399 one-time. Premium Pro is $36/month, $144 a year, or $699 one-time. Paid plans add unlimited line-editing reports and Chapter Critiques; Story Credits pay for whole-manuscript analyses. It works in English only. See ProWritingAid vs Grammarly for a full side-by-side.
For line editing and proofreading
Grammarly
Grammarly has a free plan for corrections and tone, plus 100 AI prompts a month. Pro is shown as "$12 USD" with no billing period in the visible text; plan data embedded in the page lists Pro at $144 a year, $60 every 3 months or $30 a month (as of 2026-10-17; check Grammarly's site before you buy). Pro adds full-sentence rewrites, plagiarism and AI-text detection and 2,000 AI prompts per member a month. It lists desktop, browser, Office, Google Docs and mobile apps.
- Choose it if: you want the same checks in every app you write in, including email and social posts.
LanguageTool
LanguageTool is a grammar, punctuation and style checker. Its Premium page lists more than 20,000 extra checks for English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Polish and Portuguese, up to 150,000 characters per text field, AI sentence paraphrasing and a style guide. LanguageTool says you can use it without an account in common browsers and word processors, and that its editor app for Windows, macOS and iOS needs a free account. Premium has a 14-day money-back period. Its prices load by script and weren't shown in the page text we captured, so check the Premium page.
- Choose it if: you write in more than one language. ProWritingAid works in English only.
Hemingway Editor
Hemingway Editor focuses on readability and clear sentences. Its paid version, Hemingway Editor Plus, can fix highlighted issues, check grammar and adjust tone, with a 2-week free trial and no credit card required. A classic version and free online checkers are also listed. Plus pricing isn't shown on the homepage.
- Choose it if: your main goal is shorter, plainer sentences rather than a full style report.
For story-level feedback on fiction
AutoCrit
AutoCrit is a fiction writing and editing platform. Its free plan is a writing platform with no word limits, planning noteboards and selected editing tools (adverbs, word choice, readability). AutoCrit Pro adds 25+ editing tools and reports such as pacing and dialogue, comparison against selected genres, a Story Analyzer, automated alpha and beta readers, and ePub and PDF export. Pro is sold monthly or annually; the annual plan is described as 50% off. We don't quote its dollar prices here; check AutoCrit's pricing page before you buy.
- Choose it if: you want genre-aware fiction editing and an editor to write in, with a free starting point.
Fictionary
Fictionary is story-structure software. StoryTeller lists genre-specific novel templates, a step-by-step editing journey, plot, character and setting insights, and AI-powered story feedback. StoryTeller Premium adds support for 10 manuscripts and track changes and comments. As of Oct 2026, annual billing is $168 a year for StoryTeller and $348 a year for Premium. All plans include a 7-day free trial with no credit card.
- Choose it if: you want a structural, scene-by-scene self-edit rather than line edits.
